Still Trying to Fly This Year

Okay, last week was Zone 1 -- The Front Porch, Entrance Area, and Guest Bath. Zero, zilch, nothing done because I came down with a cold on Sunday that knocked me flat. I've got Dory singing, "Just keep swimming" running through my head along with a little blue engine chanting, "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can."

FlyLady

Better this week...yay!
  1. I managed to do my "Load a Day Keeps CHAOS Away" laundry.
  2. I made my bed all but two days.
  3. The boys unloaded the dishwasher.
  4. I shined my sink every night but Saturday night because there was too much from dinner to fit and I was too tired to hand wash the extras.
  5. I got to bed at a decent hour.
  6. I got dressed every day, though I admit to not "dressing to shoes" most of the last seven days, LOL, (I really hate shoes).
  7. I did spend 15 minutes scrubbing down the counters to help out my poor showing in Zone 2 last week.
  8. For Zone 3 I got my guest room ready for guests again...so who's coming for a visit? LOL.
  9. Saturday's Family Fun was hanging with some neighbors and having a movie night.
  10. Sunday's Renew the Spirit for me was chatting for almost two hours with my BFF, Jewels!
  11. I made an appointment to donate blood this month! How about you?

Hmm...not so good last week for this FlyBaby.

  1. I managed to do my "Load a Day Keeps CHAOS Away" laundry.
  2. I made my bed all but one day.
  3. The boys unloaded the dishwasher all but one day, so I did it that day.
  4. I shined my sink every night.
  5. I got to bed at a decent hour all but one night.
  6. And obviously, I got dressed every day, though I admit to not "dressing to shoes" four of the last seven days, LOL.
  7. I did spend 15 minutes cleaning out the refrigerator which was the extent of my Zone 2 work.
  8. I did get the guest bath done which was the extent of my Zone 1 work.
  9. Saturday's Family Fun event was going to the library together!
  10. Sunday's Renew the Spirit for me was chatting for almost two hours with my BFF, Jewels!

Not a very auspicious start to my Fly-plan for 2010. Well, it is a new week so...

Flylady Accountability, LOL

A New Year and attempt gazillion to Fly with the FlyLady. Though I must say something new sticks each time I try so it can't all be a wash, LOL

One of the beauties of the FlyLady's system is that outside of the daily routines there are no, dare I use the word, chores on the weekends. Saturday is Family Fun Day. Now who doesn't like having THAT on your calendar? Sunday is Renew Your Spirit Day, which can include church but is more about recharging the ol' batteries.

Zone 1 -- Entry Way -- of January 2010 was New Year's Day and I did nothing! Granted my entry still has our Christmas wreath up so doesn't look too bad. But I include our downstairs guest bath in Zone 1 and that does need to be done. So I'll be spending 15 minutes a day doing Zone 1 stuff in addition to the Zone 2 stuff.

I'm going to baby step my way through this year, so none of the extra missions yet for me but you can get all that info for yourself by clicking through on the link in the sidebar. What my plan is, at least for the moment, is to do one FlyLady post a week -- likely on Sunday or Monday -- that will include a review of my previous week and the goals for the upcoming one. Hopefully, you all won't get too bored with it but in the end I'm doing it to hold myself accountable to the system. I really do believe in it and when I'm on task with it the house runs like a well oiled machine and my stress level is practically nil. I think I'll call this a tune up rather than an attempt!

This Week we are in Zone 2 -- The Kitchen

FlyLady -- Again

Once again I've fallen off the FlyLady wagon. Time to get back on track.

Welcome to July! We are at the start of a brand new month and that means it's time for a brand new habit. This month, we'll be working on the Swish and Swipe of the bathroom.

These are the Zones for July -- Mark your calendars:

Zone 1: The Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room (July 1 - 3) -- Instead of my Dining area, I do the downstairs Guest Bath. I also consider the stairs as part of the Entrance.

Zone 2: The Kitchen (July 6 - 10) -- I also do my Dining Area this week.

Zone 3: The Bathroom and One Extra Room (July 13 - 17) -- This is always the boys' Bath and I rotate the three bedrooms upstairs. While I'm upstairs this week, I also do the Hall.

Zone 4: The Master Bedroom (July 20 - 24) -- Of course, this includes the Master Bath. This week while I'm upstairs I also do the Laundry area.

Zone 5: The Living Room (July 27 - 31) -- My Den floats between Zone 1 and 5 depending on how long I have in those Zones. This month, I'll do the Den this week during Zone 5.

Though, for all that I fall off the wagon, I've managed better since starting to Fly than I ever did before I learned about FlyLady. My personal inventory --

  1. I make my bed every morning when I get up. (How about that shocker Mom?)
  2. I get dressed before leaving my room each morning but I'm not sure if that's because of the FlyLady or the fact I'm the only female in the house.
  3. I run the dishwasher and shine my kitchen sink every night.
  4. One of the boys is responsible for unloading the dishwasher every morning. Part of the pulling their own weight around the house theory.
  5. I run a load of laundry every day...usually in the morning...and it's done when I've folded, hung, and distributed. The boys are responsible for putting their clothes away in their dressers and closets.
  6. I regularly plan our dinners...often lunches too...and shop from that.
  7. I'm getting better about having a leftover night each week and doing breakfast for dinner at least twice a month.
  8. I run the vacuum as part of my Weekly Blessing...usually Tuesday downstairs and Friday upstairs. Ideally, the boys should be doing this as part of that whole pulling their weight thing.
  9. Downstairs dusting happens as part of my Weekly Blessing, too. My goal is to get upstairs in there somehow.
  10. I've gotten better at decluttering and letting things go. Mark will likely disagree, but I don't hoard things like I used to and have for the most part embraced the idea that if I'm not using it or not loving it, it's outta here. We usually have a donation for Goodwill or the Vets every couple of months.

Chores

I hate 'em...who doesn't.

We've tried so many things to get the boys to help out around the house that I've lost track. I've fallen back to a chore chart...lovingly created in Excel. I love creating spreadsheets and charts in Excel, just ask any of my old co-workers. The most recent incarnation of this is:

I'm sure the kids will kick up a stink...they always do. I mean really! Outside of keeping their rooms clean (which they don't), putting their clean clothes away (which they don't), and making sure their dirty clothes are in the laundry -- in the correct pile -- (which they don't), they don't have that many chores.

Is it REALLY that hard?

Well, this calendar has:

  1. KP...Kitchen Patrol which mainly means that person needs to unload the dishwasher in the morning but can sometimes include wiping down the table or sweeping the floor.
  2. VAC...Vacuum Duty which simply means vacuuming either DOWNstairs or UPstairs.
  3. GAR...Garbage Duty which mainly means emptying all the trash inside the house into the can we take to the curb but can sometimes include getting the recycling ready or taking things to the curb.

I really don't think this is too much to ask of a 10 year old, a 7 year old, and a 5 year old. Do you?

The Zone stuff is mine for my Flylady schedule. I had it on my main calendar (in the den) but wasn't using it the way I needed to. So I added my chores to the Chore Calendar in the kitchen. Hopefully, this will help me with my chores, too.

My Control Journal

If you follow this link the FlyLady has step by step instructions on how to build your personal Control Journal. I've downloaded every one of the journals including the ones for kids and have placed them all in one binder...this may be over kill but hey I'm a perfectest SHE.

So you start with a basic binder...any you have lying around will do.

I had to start mine off with this page LOL

Some of my tabs -- these were the only thing I bought for this project, yes I actually had all those page protectors lying around LOL

This is my weekly plan...these are the things I try to do on the various days. That note for a plant has been there for months LOL I'm so bad about things like that!

Here is a sample page from the Holiday Control Journal.

All the pages are in page protectors so you can use a dry erase marker...works pretty well though I sometimes feel I need to wash the pages down. And of course I have kids who LOVE to write on things they shouldn't and dry erase are the worst markers to get off of things! I actually need to get a new set of markers because said kids have run off with the one I was using for this.

FLYing through the Holidays

The Flylady does a special section around this time of year called
Cruising Through the Holidays.

Our Goal is to be finished by December 1st, so we can be cruising through the holidays!! ~ FlyLady

A few years ago I downloaded the Control Journal but didn't do anything with it. Last year with the craziness from just having moved it completely slipped my mind. Well, I've been a bad FlyBaby the last couple weeks and didn't even realize the Holidays Missions were up until this morning as I was cleaning out my inbox.

If you click on the above link it'll take you to the Holiday section of the website. Then scroll down until you see the heading "Are you ready to FLY?" and the missions are the last link.

This just started this week so it not to late to get started...come Cruise through the Holidays with me!

Mission #1: Clean and Fling!
Mission #2: Start a Holiday Control Journal ~ I already have this, just need to update for this year!
Mission #3: Gathering the Wraps! ~ I already keep everything this way though I think I'll need to pick up some more.
Mission #4: Errand Day! ~ My Errand Day is actually Friday so this one will happen tomorrow. Today I'll focus on Mission #1.

Zone 4

This week with FlyLady we're in Zone 4 which is the Master Bedroom (including the bathroom).

When I started posting the FlyLady stuff it was more for my own purposes...a kick in the butt if you will. But I wasn't keeping up with the missions and all the extra stuff and why reinvent the wheel when FlyLady has a website chalked full of info. So I'll post the zones in my ongoing attempt to keep kicking my butt in gear and while I'd love to know that someone out there is doing the zones with me you are all big girls and boys who can look up the information for yourselves LOL

Monday, October 13, 2008

Zone 3

This week with FlyLady we're in Zone 3 which is the Bathroom (in my case the upstairs kids' bath) and One Extra Bedroom (I rotate between the two kid rooms and the guest/sport/game room).

I'm not going to continue posting missions or details because I doubt any of you give two flying figs LOL

Flylady Zone 2

FLY Habits: Welcome to October! Our new habit for October is focusing on our Paper Clutter!!

This is the month of falling leaves, Halloween costumes, and a brand new habit! All month long, we are going to be working on...Paper Clutter. School is in full swing and that means tons of extra papers hanging around the house. Trust me, I know all about that. LOL

This week we are in Zone 2: The Kitchen

Sneak Peek for the Week Get a sneak peek at what is coming up this week!

Monday's Mission:We are back in the kitchen!! The mission for today is not fun! So sorry! LOL! Clean your kitchen trash cans!! Take out the trash and wash those nasty gross cans out! You know what happens when that trash bag slips down and yet the rest of the family still tosses things in there! Use a soapy rag and wipe down the sides and the bottom. Some of you may need to take the can outside and spray it out with the hose. If you have a lid, don't forget to clean the underside.

Have fun! (Kelly is ducking and running now....lol)

~ DONE ~

FlyLady's Daily Reminder - Monday is the WEEKLY HOME BLESSING HOUR!

~ Downstairs: vacuumed and swept the middles (including the stairs), feather dusted, polished TV and mirrors (didn't bother with the glass doors as they looked fine), and took out the trash

~ DONE ~

Today's Mission:
Your mission for today should you choose to accept it: Scrub down your counter-tops. I don't mean to just wipe a rag across them! I mean you get some hot soapy water and you wipe down the counters from front to back and side to side. Yes, you have to move the stuff on the counters to do this. DON'T take everything off at one time and then plan to put it all back again, I promise you will get sidetracked and then you will all email me crying that it is all my fault!! LOL! You just move your toaster (or coffee pot or whatever this is an example here! :>) ) over to one side and wipe down the counter, then move over a foot or so, move aside what is there and wipe down some more and so on. We are not marathon cleaning the kitchen here, just getting all the crumbs and junk that seems to build up behind and under things. Have fun! Don't obsess! Enjoy!

~ DONE ~

FlyLady's Daily Reminder - Tuesday is a free day. Remember to do your normal routines!

Well, this week I'm off to a backwards start. I kinda made yesterday my free day so today I need to do the weekly home blessing hour (well it's more like two having a two story house as we do LOL)

And I need to try and tackle at least one of those missions! It's a REALLY good thing that this month's habit is paper...I've got stacks LOL

~ I even wiped down the front door which is actually part of Zone 1 but didn't get done last week, and wiped down the outside of the kitchen appliances which is part of Zone 2.

~ I'm feeling pretty good right now and am off to enjoy 15-20 minutes of me time before starting the upstairs. (Green = edit at 1:16pm 10-7-08)

Fly Time the Last of Zone 1

Well, this is a day late but here's yesterday's (Friday) mission.

Today is our last day in Zone 1. Today's mission is very simple! Grab a broom and a vacuum cleaner. Set the timer! 5 minutes in each area. Sweep the front porch and shake out the door mat. Next a quick sweep or vacuum in the entrance area. Last dash around the dining room with a broom or the vacuum. This is just a quick mission that makes you feel so great. When there are no dust bunnies chasing you or gritty floors your home just feels better! You do not have to get overwhelmed by this. Do not move furniture around or get sidetracked. Just a quick maintenance sweep and vacuum.

Congratulations on a job well done this week! We are always so proud of you!!

Thursday's mission - completed. Friday's mission - not LOL

Today (Saturday) is Family Fun Day - not sure yet what or if we'll be doing anything. Mark headed out to Reno this morning for the week.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is Renew Your Spirit Day - the usual, church and Sunday school.

Thursday, October 2, 2008

Fly Time

Okay...continuing Zone 1 today. Did you get yesterday's mission done? I did...yay for me.

FlyLady's Daily Reminder - Today is Errand day! (well not for me...Fridays are my Errand days...today is my menu planning, grocery list making, prep for Friday's errands)

Kelly's mission:

Today we are going to go on a Trash hunt! Set your timer for15 minutes and spend 5 minutes in each area. Start with the front porch and gather up whatever needs to be tossed. Go to the entrance area next, look for the junk mail, newspapers, etc., that seems to accumulate here. Toss! Next head into the Dining Room, grab anything that is really trash but you just haven't noticed it. The stray napkins, magazines, junk mail, old school papers etc. You all know what seems to pile up! Go get it and toss it! Have Fun! Remember this is only 5 minutes in each area, do not get sidetracked or obsessed!

On your mark...get set...GO...

Come "Fly" with me

I've been such a slacker lately. It's a new month. Time to get back on track with the Flylady

This week we are working on Zone 1: The Entrance, Front Porch, and Dining Room (or in my case guest bath).

FlyLady's Daily Reminder - Today is Anti-Procrastination Day!
Also, don't forget your 5 minute room rescue!

Kelly's Mission for today:

Today is the day we go after that "stuff" that gets left in the Entrance area and Dining room. The shoes, jackets, laundry baskets etc. Set your timer for 15 minutes and go after the things that need to be put away. Deliver them to the proper homes and get back to the rooms and check them again. Do not get sidetracked when you are putting something away in another room and start picking up that room. Example if you are taking shoes to your room don't get sidetracked by stopping and straightening something in the bedroom. Put away what you need to and go back to the Zone rooms. If you notice that you need to straighten in another room that you have made a delivery to, then review your schedule and see if you can go to that room for a 5 minute room rescue. If you do not have time then look ahead to your schedule and try to figure out When you can get there! This is not all or nothing! This is all about babysteps and being proud of the small things that we can accomplish!

Let's see if I can get this mission done by dinner time LOL

Flylady would be proud...

I've been "flying" with the Flylady for a couple years now. Most of the time I'm fairly good at following her zones and routines but this summer everything went south...ya' know to HE-double-hockey-sticks in a hand basket.

Anyway, I'm taking my 15 minute break and doing a quick blog update.

I've been cleaning the kitchen today. I'm talking about the take everything out, wipe down the shelves, organize and put everything back, and wipe down the outside of the cabinets kind of cleaning. I've got one more lower cabinet to clean out not counting under the sink which is on my list too but it'll be the LAST thing that gets done.

I'm not entirely sure what set me in motion this morning. The kitchen zone is two weeks away per Flylady schedule so it's not that. At 95 degrees, it's certainly not a misplaced need to spring clean. I did do a major shopping yesterday after dropping Ian off for school...oh the joys of shopping with ONE kid, of course shopping with NO kids at all is my preferred method. When I got home and was putting things away what should happen but I discovered I had bought something already sitting in the cabinet they call a pantry...not a huge deal because it'll get used eventually. So I started in the "pantry" and worked my way around the top portion of the kitchen. Then started in on the bottom half. Once I've finished the cabinets it's on to the refrigerator/freezer which the kids have sweetly covered in spilled juice or Kool-Aid.

So, yes, the Flylady would be proud!
